I’m an editor at Chronicle Books, acquiring mostly middle-grade novels and graphic novels for early readers, middle grade, and YA.
I’m always on the lookout for stories that have a compelling voice and characters that stay with you long after you turn the final page. Whether it be heartfelt contemporary fiction or funky genre fiction, I’m most drawn to stories that feature a diverse cast of queer characters, monsters of any kind, unexpected twists, or tug-at-your-heartstrings emotions. Genre-wise, I especially love horror, literary fiction, mysteries, romance, and stories that blend a variety of genres together or defy expectations.
A few topics I’d love to see:
- More queer, BIPOC middle-grade stories, both literary stories and fun genre fiction
- A good locked-door mystery or escape room mystery for middle-grade readers
- Vampires! Especially stories that use monsters as a metaphor to get deeper themes across.
- MG novels in verse or novels with multimedia elements (like blog posts, text messages, etc) or unique formatting
- More YA horror graphic novels! Whether it’s gothic horror or more of a slasher, I would love to have more horror in my inbox always!
- MG first-crush stories that feature queer, BIPOC, and/or disabled protagonists
- MG with fat or chubby protagonists
- Nerdy, fandom-centric stories, especially in the graphic novels space
