My Manuscript Wish List®

I am Ashley Reisinger, an assistant literary agent at Triada US Literary Agency where I am actively building my list in the following genres and age categories.

In general, I have a broad range of interests in Adult, YA, and MG fiction and gravitate toward stories that have a strong commercial premise and more literary writing. My tastes tend to encompass a little bit of everything, and I’m really drawn to genre-blending—I particularly love when speculative elements or twists are incorporated into familiar genre structures (i.e.: spec romances, mysteries/thrillers in SFF settings, etc.). I am always seeking stories that reflect diverse experiences and perspectives from traditionally underrepresented voices.

Adult

Romance:

I am primarily looking for romance in the adult age category, specifically:

  • Romance with a spec twist (witches, ghosts, magic, timeloops, love spells, soulmates, etc.)
  • Romantasy (but the worldbuilding needs to feel very grounded and accessible with the focus more on the “rom” than the “fantasy”)
  • Adventure and/or heist roms (the more bonkers, the better)
  • Contemporary romance/rom coms (though it needs to have a strong voice and strong hook)
  • Nerdy/fandom romances (comic con, cosplay, fanart/fanfic, D&D, etc.)
  • Sports roms (particularly BIPOC and/or LGBTQ)

Think: THE DEAD ROMANTICS; BOYFRIEND MATERIAL; YOU HAD ME AT HOLA; THE LOVE HYPOTHESIS; BOOK LOVERS; WEATHER GIRL; THE BODYGUARD; PRIDE, PREJUDICE, AND OTHER FLAVORS; TAKE A HINT, DANI BROWN

In romance, am NOT typically the right fit for historical, regency, medical, Christmas, cowboy/western, or dark romances. I’m also NOT the right fit for erotica, police/detective love interests, or heavy/serious romantic thrillers/suspense.

Other:

I am also open to the following in Adult, though prefer if they have a strong romantic subplot:

  • Horror
While I enjoy and am open to a broad range of horror, I would really love something funny, satirical, or meta in this space.
  • Mystery/Thriller
I would love a mystery or thriller with a spec setting or twist, a locked-room mystery (à la Knives Out), or a mystery with a very strong romantic thread. I would also love a humorous, campy, over-the-top mystery/thriller/suspense.
  • Women’s fiction
The women’s fic I’m interested in really has to toe the line between women’s fic and romance, and/or needs a very strong (preferably funny) character voice.
  • Grounded/accessible or low SFF
I tend to prefer low SFF (such as contemporary fantasy or near-future sci-fi) as opposed to space operas or second world fantasy. That said, if the worldbuilding is very grounded and accessible, then I could be open to higher SFF, particularly for something that does blend genres.

For Adult titles, think: MEXICAN GOTHIC, BAD CREE, THE GOOD GIRL, THEN SHE WAS GONE, DIAL A FOR AUNTIES, MAYBE IN ANOTHER LIFE, THE ATLAS SIX, ASSISTANT TO THE VILLAIN, THE 7 ½ DEATHS OF EVELYN HARDCASTLE

In Adult, I am NOT typically the right fit for historical fiction (unless it’s 80s/90s/00s), police procedurals, military narratives, high fantasy/sci-fi, or dystopian.

Young Adult

Romance:

In YA romance I am looking for:

  • Contemporary with a strong hook
  • Laugh-out-loud romcoms
  • Romance with a speculative twist (magic, ghosts, timeloops, soul mates, etc.)

Think: HAPPILY EVER AFTERS, A CUBAN GIRL’S GUIDE TO TEA AND TOMORROW, TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE, LOVE FROM SCRATCH

SFF:

In YA science fiction and fantasy I am looking for:

  • Lower SFF/accessible worldbuilding
  • Contemporary fantasy (whether light and fun or dark and spooky)
  • Magical academies/dark academia
  • Thought-provoking sci-fi that’s near future or tech focused (versus set in space)
  • Genre blending

Think: THE WHISPERING DARK, CEMETERY BOYS, WILDER GIRLS, SO LET THEM BURN, THE DARKNESS OUTSIDE US, the ARC OF A SCYTHE series, HOW TO SUCCEED IN WITCHCRAFT

Other:

In YA I’m also looking for:

  • Mystery
  • Horror
  • Retellings/reimaginings (that don’t stick TOO CLOSE to the source)
  • Illustrated graphic novels (I’m not taking script-only submissions at this time)

In YA I am NOT typically the right fit for historical, high sci-fi/space operas, dystopian, Arthurian retellings, teen pregnancy stories, eating disorders, “sick lit”, horse books, Christmas stories, or zombies.

Middle Grade

I’m very selective with MG and am primarily looking for heartfelt, lyrical contemporary right now and illustrated graphic novels (I’m not taking script-only submissions at this time). I am also open to speculative fiction in MG with a preference for contemporary fantasy, and I have a soft spot for quirky, snarky characters/voice in this space.

Think: FROM THE DESK OF ZOE WASHINGTON; FRONT DESK; AMARI AND THE NIGHT BROTHERS; GHOST SQUAD; RED, WHITE, AND WHOLE; ARU SHAH AND THE END OF TIME; JUST A PINCH OF MAGIC

In MG, I am NOT typically the right fit for historical fiction, time travel, animal protagonists, dystopian, European-inspired fantasy settings, high sci-fi/space operas, Christmas books, “sick lit”, zombies, chapter books, or lower MG.
