My Manuscript Wish List®

I acquire a range of fiction and nonfiction for St. Martin’s Press and St. Martin’s Essentials.

In nonfiction, I am looking for both prescriptive and narrative titles. Specifically, I’m seeking outdoor narratives with compelling adventure and emotional arcs (Wild by Cheryl Strayed), especially by marginalized authors (The Home Place by J. Drew Lanham), and memoirs that serve the dual function of telling the author’s story and teaching the reader about a particular time, place, or craft. Some examples include Just Kids by Patti Smith and Lotus Girl by Helen Tworkov. I’m also looking for social issue-driven narrative nonfiction; creativity self-help (Writing on Empty by Natalie Goldberg); and philosophy delivered in fresh, accessible, and creative ways (The Stoic Mindset by Mark Tuitert).

In fiction, I’m seeking beautifully-written, character-driven upmarket fiction. I’m particularly interested in braided narratives (Everything I’ve Never Told You by Celeste Ng; Atonement by Ian McEwan), intergenerational narratives (Pachinko by Min Jin Lee), and works that focus on complex non-romantic relationships (The Door by Magda Szabo). Finally, I am looking for select works of speculative fiction that address real world issues (Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia; The Mermaid of Black Conch by Monique Roffey; Tar Baby by Toni Morrison).
