My Manuscript Wish List®

Sophie Cudd joined The Book Group in 2023, formerly with William Morris Endeavor. Born and raised in Nashville, TN, Sophie has a degree in English Literature from Southern Methodist University and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Sophie works with a wide range of authors, including New York Times and USA Today bestselling novelists and children’s book writers. In fiction, Sophie loves high concept and high stakes novels, with a strong sense of time and place and accessible, deeply resonant characters. In nonfiction, Sophie’s interests are wide-ranging, and she is particularly interested in well-researched narrative nonfiction, food writing and cookbooks, and the occasional memoir.

Below is an incomplete, ever-changing list of what Sophie is looking for:

Fiction:

  • Novels that capture ensemble drama – workplace, families, friend groups, secret societies, cults, retreats, vacations [i.e. White Lotus, Industry, Succession, Big Little Lies]
  • Novels with “witchy” or supernatural elements
  • Novels set in the culinary, literary or art world
  • Novels that “crossover” between genres [i.e. speculative romance; historical thriller; etc.]
  • Novels set in the South – any time period
  • Romance in the vein of Nancy Meyers, Nora Ephron

Nonfiction:

  • Art history or literary history
  • Narrative nonfiction that investigates a “traditional” event in the realm of the 21st century, such as sorority rush or weddings
  • Narrative nonfiction about the music industry or history – preferably hip hop, rap, country or folk
  • Narrative nonfiction with an empirical/research bent, that can bring theorizing and data into the realm of everyday lives [eg. The Body Keeps the Score, or The Righteous Mind]
  • Image forward food writing, cookbooks, or interiors

Not currently looking for:

  • High fantasy or sci fi
  • Middle grade or young adult novels
  • Satire
  • Historical fiction that doesn’t cross over into another genre
